The former president and current speaker of the parliament, Mohamed Nasheed have proposed MDP’s national council meeting, to have an extraordinary congress of the MDP in order to finalize a date to vote on the government system.

In his letter for MDP council members, President Nasheed proposed multiple amendments to be brought to the Constitution as well. He also said that the constitution should have been amended sooner. Hence a voting date should be finalized soon to declare the government system of the Maldives and to amend the Constitution in accordance with the result of the voting.

The amendments to the constitution Nasheed had proposed include, declaring the candidate who wins over 30 percent of votes as the winner of presidential elections, and in circumstances, if no candidate wins 30 percent of votes, a second round of voting to be held between the two candidates with the most number of votes. He also proposed, making necessary amendments to the number of independent institutions and their composition.

The Constitution currently declares the presidential system as the system of government in the Maldives. It was decided in a public vote held in 2007.

Meanwhile, Nasheed has been vocal about supporting changing the governing system to a parliamentary system to run the government.
