Cyryx College Chairman Ahmed Shareef calls to take steps to avoid weakening the relationship between China.

Referring to the statement of not having a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Maldives, said by the Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer, Cyryx College Chairman Shareef said that it is unbelievable not to have an Free Trade Agreement between China and Maldives adding that World Trading Organisation will be looking after any international trade agreement between other foreign countries.

Shareef also said that China being one of the most influential countries over international trade, it is wise to take steps to avoid weakening the relationship between China.

Shareef also highlighted that the FTA with China would help to encourage Chinese students to come and study in Maldivian Universities and Colleges, and this will also encourage to conduct knowledge exchange programmes between Maldivian students studying in China Universities, promoting the investments partnerships for higher education.

Shareef denied believing in having an FTA between China, he also called the state to review the agreement and present it at the global market, encouraging FTA between other foreign countries as well.

Speaking at the recent parliament, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer said that more laws are needed inorder to act upon the FTA agreement between China. He also assured that no changes were brought to the agreements made by previous government administration, rather the current state policy is to review those and add on corrective measures.

Speaker of the parliament Mr. Nasheed also agreed to Finance Ministers statement and said that to act to the FTA, both countries have to follow certain regulations agreed upon, but since prior activities mentioned in the agreement are not completed by the both countries, it is believable that an FTA is not there in the agreements between China and Maldives.
