The Foreign Ministry of the Maldives has stated that 25 local students residing at Kharkiv, Ukraine have departed to the Maldives today amidst fear of tension built up between Ukraine and Russia.

The fears stem from the fact that Russia has massed more than 130,000 Russian troops on Ukraine’s borders to the north, south, and east. It has also launched massive military drills near the borders of Ukraine.

The Foreign Ministry of the Maldives stated that out of 35 local students residing in Kharkiv, the closest main city to the Russian border, 25 students departed today, while four students departed on Friday. The ministry also confirmed the arrival of one student before Friday.

Ministry reassures that the rest of the five students who are currently in Kharkiv are in the process of leaving the city. The Ministry also stated that the Maldives Embassy in Berlin, Germany is in touch with the students, guiding them on the procedures.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine since last year, amassing tens of thousands of soldiers, as well as equipment and artillery, on the country's doorstep. The aggression has sparked warnings from US intelligence officials that a Russian invasion could be imminent.

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has triggered the greatest security crisis on the continent since the Cold War.
