Russia’s flag carrier Aeroflot has decided to resume flights to the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Aeroflot cancelled flights to all international airports due to sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine-Russia conflict. However, Russia is now in the process of transferring registrations of aeroplanes operated by Russian airlines to Russia’s aeronautical register.
According to reports 800 of some 1,367 aeroplanes in Russia have been already reregistered.
The country also lost 78 aeroplanes that were arrested in foreign countries due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict and would not return to Russia.
With the availability of aeroplanes, Aeroflot announced the restart of flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka on 8th April to be operated on the Airbus A330.
As Aeroflot plans to resume flights to additional destinations in the coming weeks, the carrier has been in contact with Maldives Civil Aviation Authority to resume flights to the Maldives. Although a restart date is yet to be determined, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Maldives has given the green light to resume flights.
Aeroflot had suspended flight operations to the Maldives following an escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict on March 8, leading to a 72.9 per cent drop in tourist arrivals from the Russian market.
Before the conflict, Aeroflot operated daily flights to the Maldives carrying the majority of the Russian tourists. In 2021 alone more than 200,000 tourists arrived from Russia placing only second behind India in the top arrival chart.
