The case of MP Ikram Hassan for allegedly attacking a Rapid Response Team (RRT) official, lodged with the Parliament’s Ethics Committee, by the Maldives Health Professional Union (MHPU).

As per the letter forwarded by the MHPU to the Parliament’s Ethics Committee, MP Ikram is accused of threatening the RRT official and for allegedly attacking a healthcare professional who was collecting samples for COVID-19 from the parliamentarian.

According to the letter by MHPU, Mr. Ikram is also accused of raising his hand twice against the RRT official meanwhile reportedly saying that the health worker cannot harm him as he is an MP, and warning the RRT official of the actions he would take against her.

MHPU condemned the actions of the elected representative of the public for attacking a regular healthcare worker and harassing them.

MHPU also stated that since the 7th of March, health workers and volunteers have been responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, away from home, family, and friends and they continue to serve the nation, not for a financial benefit.

Speaking to ‘Ras Online’, Ikram denied the accusation of hitting an RRT official, during the process of Covid-19 test sample taken at Maafannu Madharusa. He said that he went to take the test sample after spending 14 days in quarantine.

Meanwhile, on social media, RRT officials who have seen the incident continue to accuse MP Ikram of hitting and harassing the RRT official while the Covid test sample was taken and the incident has been reported to the police.

Police continue to investigate the incident, which has been reported by the RRT official to the police.
