Sending his condolences to the royal family and the people of UAE, after the UAE announced the death of its President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Friday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that His Highness Sheikh Khalifa kept a close relationship with the Maldives.

President Solih also described the late President Sheikh Khalifa as a visionary leader in a tweet.

He also sent a message of condolences on behalf of the government and the people of the Maldives, to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Acting President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Ruler of Dubai.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of the President of the United Arab Emirates, the Emir of Abu Dhabi, and the Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. His Highness was a close ally and a friend to the Maldives. He was a visionary leader who made important strides to take UAE to great heights of progress and prosperity, and I believe his contributions will have a continuous impact on the future of UAE,” his message of condolences reads.

Following the news of his death, the government of the Maldives also decided that the Maldives flag be flown at half-staff.

The United Arab Emirates’ long-ailing ruler, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, passed away at the age of 73. Sheikh Khalifa was elected to succeed his father, the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as the UAE’s first president since the union in 1971 until he passed away on November 2, 2004.

Following the news of his death, the UAE’s ministry of presidential affairs announced a 40-day period of mourning and a three-day suspension of work in all ministries and the private sector beginning on Friday, including flags to be flown at half-staff.
