Opposition political party, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) accuses the founder of the party former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of avoiding debt payment of the party’s former leadership.
DRP says that former president Maumoon has put the party’s debt to its members, following his resignation from the leadership of the party. DRP says that the members continue to receive bills for the debt by the former leadership, hence the council of the party has decided to file a case against Maumoon.
DRP also condemns the act of involving the MRM party (Maldives Reform Movement), formed by Maumoon, in the current political coalition with the government ruling party.
DRP, founded by MAumoon, has been the start for many politicians in democratic politics. DRP was led by the former Home Minister Thasmeen Ali, following the resignation of Maumoon from its leadership. Later on, the party was led by former MP Mohamed Nasheed (Kaanal) as well. Meanwhile, right now the party is led by the famous businessman and parliament member Abdulla Jabir.
