Two amendments to the constitution proposed by MP for Kaashidhoo Abdulla Jabir, and MP for Mahibadhoo Ahmed Thariq, have been placed on the agenda of the parliament on Wednesday’s sitting.
The amendment by MP Jabir calls to change the governing system of the Maldives to a Parliamentary system from the current Presidential system. As per Mr. Jabir, although the public vote has decided on the governing system, the constitution does not clearly declare the system of governance.
Meanwhile, the speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has been a supporter of a Parliamentary system, but speaking regarding an amendment proposed has stated that this is not the time for a change in the governing system in the country.
During the constitutional amendments brought in 2007, the public has voted on the governance system, where a majority of who voted decided for a presidential system, while most political leaders vouched for a parliamentary system back then.
The amendment by MP Ahmed Thariq included changing the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) of the Maldives. As per the proposed amendment, the change would be supported to avoid its influence on governance and its constituency.
The current members of the JSC include; a supreme court judge, a high court judge, an elected member from the lower courts, speaker of the parliament, a parliament member, a public nominated and parliament approved member, president of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Auditor General, a member nominated by the President and an elected member amongst the lawyers.
The Parliament will debate on whether or not to accept the bills and if the bills go through they will be forwarded to the relevant committee for evaluations, after which a final vote will be asked.
