After a public prosecutor from the PG office revealed information of a rape victim, during a parliamentary committee meeting, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem apologizes for the public prosecutor's actions.

Speaking at the parliaments Human Rights and Gender Committee meeting, the public prosecutor, Fathimath Nabaha revealed confidential information of a minor rape victim. She said it as an example colling in to use the rape evidence kits mandatory in the collection and forensic analysis of evidence collected from rape victims.

In a tweet, Prosecutor General Shameem apologized for the incident and said that she was unaware that the parliamentary committee meeting was being live-streamed.



Meanwhile, Human Rights and Gender Committee chair, Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood, is hit with criticism for not making a move to stop the public prosecutor, as she continued to reveal the confidential information in a meeting, while it was being broadcasted live.

Previously, committee meetings have avoided broadcasting or stopped sharing live audio in such incidents. Moreover, if in a committee meeting, where confidential information is needed to be shared, the meeting would be restricted to media entrance as well.

Under the Article 59 of the Sexual Offenses Act, The Gender Minister shall have the power to submit to the court, for revealing any information that may give a hint as to the identity of the victim, in reporting or publishing reports on investigation and trials relating to an offense of rape, sexual injury or sexual assault.

The court then shall have the power to impose a fine between Maldivian Rufiyaa 10,000 and 15,000 on persons found guilty of such an offense.
