The Maldivian government has officially spoken for the first time about Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa’s visit to the Maldives.
President Gotabaya arrived in the Maldives on July 13 on a transit trip and left the Maldives today, the Foreign Ministry of the Maldives said in a statement. The statement further read that Gotabaya arrived in the Maldives after the Sri Lankan government officially informed the Maldives government of the visit.
Gotabaya, who arrived in the Maldives on a Sri Lankan military plane on Tuesday night, flew to Singapore on a Saudi plane today morning. Gotabaya was accompanied by his wife and two security officers.
After spending 33 hours in the Maldives, and on his arrival in Singapore, Gotabaya sent his resignation letter to the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament by email. Before his resignation, the President handed over his powers to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
