President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has introduced significant changes to the structure and responsibilities of key government ministries, as detailed in Directive 25/2024 issued on Thursday.

The reshuffle follows the authority granted under Article 116(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives.

The changes include renaming the Ministry of Finance as the Ministry of Finance and Planning, which will now take on an expanded role. In addition to its financial responsibilities, the ministry will oversee land utilization, urban development, national development planning, and statistics. These areas were previously under the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, which has now been dissolved.

As part of the restructuring, the Maldives Bureau of Statistics has been transferred to the Ministry of Finance and Planning, which will assume responsibility for all statistical operations.

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has also undergone a transformation, now renamed the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure. This ministry will focus on social housing projects and formulating housing policies, particularly those related to social housing.

To streamline communication, the directive announced updated contact numbers: the Ministry of Finance and Planning will now use the number 13, while the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure will use 491.

At a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Thursday morning, the reassignments were formalized as Cabinet Ministers received their appointment letters, took their oaths of office, and signed their oaths. During his address to the ministers, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth transition and minimizing disruptions for staff as responsibilities shift between ministries.

The restructuring reflects the administration’s commitment to enhancing governance and improving service delivery through strategic planning and efficient resource allocation.
