The Maldives Police Service reported that a total of MVR 123,000 in fines were imposed for vape-related violations in March alone. A total of 27 individuals were fined between March 1 and the end of the month, with fines totaling MVR 123,000.
The breakdown of the fines revealed that MVR 82,000 were imposed for using vapes, while MVR 41,000 were issued for possessing vapes. Additionally, six cases involving the illegal importation and sale of vapes, cigarettes, and tobacco-related products were registered last month.
In a related development, the President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, has approved an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which bans the use and trade of vapes in the country. The amendment also sets the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products at 21 years.
The amendment follows the ban on the sale, free distribution, and use of e-cigarettes, vape devices, and related products in the Maldives, which has been in effect since December 15 of the previous year.
