In a significant move to improve the safety of the country’s transportation system, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has established the Maldives Transportation Safety Board.
The Board, which will operate under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, officially began its functions on 8 April 2025.
The decision was formalized through Directive No. 7/2025, issued by the President’s Office. This new initiative aligns with Section 116 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, reflecting President Muizzu’s commitment to creating a dedicated government agency for investigating incidents and accidents across the country’s land, sea, and civil aviation sectors.
The establishment of the Maldives Transportation Safety Board underscores the President’s recognition of the growing need for a specialized body to enhance the safety and security of the nation’s transportation system.
The main responsibilities of the Board, as outlined in the directive, include investigating transportation-related incidents and accidents, analyzing data, and recommending measures to improve safety standards across all sectors. Furthermore, the Directive specifies that all correspondence addressed to the Maldives Transportation Safety Board should use the number 501 in the numbering system for State agencies.
This move is expected to bolster efforts to improve safety protocols and ensure a more secure and efficient transportation network across the Maldives.
