Housing Minister Mohammed Aslam has said that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats can work together if negotiations between the two parties are carried out transparently and with clearly defined objectives.
Amid ongoing public and internal party debate on whether collaboration between the two factions is the best way forward, Aslam emphasized that transparent communication and mutual trust would be key to any successful partnership. In a statement on X he noted that both party members and the wider public would benefit most from such an approach, as it would help maintain trust and drive meaningful progress.
His remarks come at a time when MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has also expressed support for former President Mohamed Nasheed’s call for cooperation between the two parties. However, senior figures such as MDP President Abdulla Shahid have not yet commented on the matter.
Differences between Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih remained unresolved during Solih’s presidency, eventually leading to Nasheed’s departure from the MDP—the party that formed the foundation of his political career. Following his exit, Nasheed openly vowed to dissolve the MDP and established The Democrats in a bid to challenge and weaken his former party in the presidential election.
