Transport Minister Aishath Nahla has been elected as the Vice-Chair of a high-level meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

She was elected as the 1st Vice-Chairperson of the ICAO High-level Meeting on the feasibility of a long-term aspirational goal for international aviation CO₂ emissions reductions. The nomination was put forward by Singapore and seconded by Greece.

The main purpose of the meeting is to discuss ways to reduce emissions from global air transport, reduce fuel consumption using modern technologies and reduce fuel costs. The key conclusions of the meeting, which will be attended by air transport experts and relevant ministers, will be presented to the next ICAO General Assembly.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Nahla said that this is the time for the aviation sector to take steps to reduce emissions into the atmosphere.

During the address, she highlighted that the Maldives is living with the consequences of the climate crisis which translates to extensive loss, damage, and disruption to peoples’ lives and property.





She reiterated that Maldives has shown commitment to a greener and sustainable air transport sector and shown its commitment to the ICAO’s initiatives by volunteering to participate in CORSIA from next year onwards.
