Maldives will always maintain the India First policy, President Ibrahim Mohamed Saleh has said.
The President made the remarks when Dr. Subrahmahniyam Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs of India, paid a courtesy call on President Solih on Monday evening. The meeting took place at the Hotel ITC Maurya in New Delhi, India.
During the meeting, the two highlighted the long-standing friendly and close relations between the two countries. They also discussed further strengthening of bilateral relations in areas of mutual interest.
The two also discussed the ongoing projects being implemented in the Maldives with India’s assistance. These include the Greater Male’ Connectivity Bridge, housing projects, the Police Academy project in Addu City, and other projects. The Indian External Affairs Minister noted that projects are already underway in the Maldives with Indian assistance and assured that he would work to accelerate the work of these projects.
The President thanked the Government of India for its assistance in the social and economic development of the Maldives. He also assured the Indian External Affairs Minister that the Maldives will always uphold the India First policy.
The President is on a four-day official visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The President was accompanied by a delegation of government officials and Maldivian business leaders.
