The Independent Institutions Committee of the parliament has voted in favor of appointing Gasim Abdul Kareem for the vacant membership position in the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
As per the report of the Parliament committee, Gasim was interviewed before the committee voted in favor of the appointing Gasim. Gasim is known as the former Bank of Maldives (BML) F. Nilandhoo branch manager who blew the whistle on the MMPRC graft scandal.
Gasim won with a majority, 2/3 of the members who voted in from the Parliament committee.
The NIC position went vacant following the dismissal of Ahmed Sulaiman. Dismissal of Ahmed Sulaiman was proceeded with the advice from the parliament to the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on 10th of August.
The National Integrity Commission (NIC) was established on 15 October 2015 by the former President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The National Integrity Commission is a separate legal entity having its own common seal, with the power to sue and to be sued in its own name and with the power to take on undertakings in its own name.
NIC Act is applicable to the following Law Enforcement Agencies and their employees;
- The Maldives Police Service established under Law No. 5/2008 (Police Act);
- The Maldives Customs Service established under Law No. 8/2011 (Maldives Customs Act);
- The Maldives Correctional Service established under Law No. 14/2013 (The Maldives Prisons and Parole Act);
- Maldives Immigration established under Law No. 1/2007 (Maldives Immigration Law)
