The Government of Maldives has strongly condemned the latest aggression and airstrikes carried out in the occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza by Israel, resulting in the death and injury of a number of innocent Palestinian civilians.

On Friday, Israeli forces carried out a series of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, which began with the assassination of a commander of one of the Palestinian resistance factions. As a result, ten Palestinians were killed---including a child and a woman---and 55 others were wounded, including ten children and four women.

In a statement condemning the horrific act of violence, the Government of Maldives stated that it remains deeply concerned by the disproportionate use of force by Israel on unarmed civilians in the occupied territories, including women and children.

“The Government recalls that the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel is in violation of international law and relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions. A lasting peaceful resolution of the conflict can only be realized through a two-state solution, with an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Government of Maldives and the Maldivian people convey its sincere condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims of the Israeli aggression in Gaza.” the statement read.

Further in the statement, Maldives reaffirmed its solidarity with the people and the Government of Palestine and reiterated its steadfast commitment to work closely with the international community to advocate the cause of Palestine.

Israeli warplanes hit several sites in the blockaded territory on Friday, part of a surprise operation named “Breaking Dawn” that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said thwarted alleged planned rocket attacks by Palestinian Islamic Jihad. After a retaliatory fire from the militants, Israel warned on Saturday that its bombing campaign could last a week, in the worst escalation of violence since last May’s 11-day conflict.
