An end to a long wait, 277 lawyers took their oath on Saturday.
The oath was taken through an e-ceremony held in 6 batches for the 277 lawyers. The High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz administered their oaths through this virtual ceremony.
Following the amendments brought to the Legal Profession Act exempts current law graduates from having to sit in the bar exams to obtain their legal license, unless they pass a one-month training program run by the Bar Council, but they are still required to sit in the bar exam once it’s prepared.
All the 277 lawyers who took their oath on Saturday, have passed the one-month training program run by the Bar Council.
Although a number of lawyers proceeded with their oaths, a concerning issue has been raised when the Bar Council rejected the 3 graduates from the Madina Islamic University to practice in the Maldives. The Bar Council and the Government are under criticism for this decision of the Bar Council.
