Maldives and Malaysia have signed a mutual agreement on the recognition of domestic driver's licenses issued by both countries
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aisha Nahla, on behalf of the Government of Maldives. Malaysia signed the agreement with its Transport Minister Dr. Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Ministry said that under the agreement, locally issued vehicle driving license holders will be able to use their licenses in Malaysia. Under the agreement, the Malaysian license will also be used in the Maldives, the ministry said.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Nahula highlighted that this would ease mobility for Maldivians living in Malaysia and vice versa. She added that this symbolizes the strength of the relationship between the two countries.
The first discussions on the use of Maldivian driving licenses in Malaysia were held during the 2019 International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
