President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih meeting with the resident community of Maduvvari Island.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated on Saturday that the harbor development project of Maduvvari Island in the Meemu Atoll would proceed after consultation and with the input and perspective of the island’s community. He made the statement at a meeting with the resident community of the island.

The most pressing concerns of the community of Maduvvari Island are related to the harbor project and coastal erosion, which the President highlighted and discussed at his meeting earlier with the public officials of the island. The President said that the project would commence once the community gave their input about the design concept of the harbor, which caused a stall in the project.

The President announced that a team from the Minister of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure would travel to the island in September to hold consultations with the community about the design of the harbor. Coastal protection works on the island are expected to commence concurrently.

The President further announced the administration’s plans to resume mobile laboratory services on the island. He also stated that a project to develop a youth center would commence soon.

President also met with the island council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members of Madduvari Island on Saturday. The meeting was held in the afternoon at the Secretariat of the Maduvvari Island Council.

At the meeting, the council members highlighted that the majority of the island's developmental projects have been initiated under the current administration and expressed their gratitude to the President. They also shared with the President the community’s most pertinent needs and concerns. Discussions at the meeting centered on challenges faced due to coastal erosion, storm surges, and the design of the harbor; addressing space constraints at the school, and the need for a youth center.

The harbor development project of the island was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company PLC (MTCC). Commencement of the project is behind schedule due to disagreements within the community over the design of the harbor. The President said the project would only proceed with the community’s input. Water and sewerage development projects are also underway on the island.

After the meeting, the President met with the island’s resident community. He is on an official visit to five islands in the Meemu Atoll. The next stop of the President’s visit to the five-island tour of Meemu Atoll would take him to Dhiggaru Island.
