A total of 51 MW of solar PV will be installed during the current presidential term, Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aiminath Shauna said.

She made the statement while speaking at the ceremony to handover R. Ungofaaru power house to Fenaka Cooperation. In her speech, Shauna said that only 16 MW of solar energy systems were installed in different parts of the country when the current government took over. However, the cyrrent government has installed an additional 20 MW of solar in recent days, said Shauna.

She also highlighted that installing solar panels would save MVR 271 million on oil expenditure.

"At today's price alone, we are talking about fuel savings of about Rs 385 million. And when all the projects are completed, including the projects which are on various stages of tendering, a total of 127 MW of power will be generated. This will save us about MVR 1 billion in fuel," said Shauna.

Shauna further said that the home solar system will be installed on the roofs of a total of 1,000 households before November this year. This will significantly reduce the electricity expenditure of the people, she said.
