Dr. Abdullah Mausoom, Minister of Tourism, announced that simple measures had been taken to accelerate the approval of land for tourism on islands.
Tourism Minister Mausoom stated at the third Viavathi Raajje conference being held on Gan Island, Laamu Atoll, that the President's Office will expedite the requests provided by the islands for land approval to the Tourism Ministry. He described it as a major step forward.
During a panel discussion at the Viavathi conference, Mausoom stated that while the island council has the discretion of setting land rent for the tourism-allocated property, and it is critical to determine a fair price for the land.
"You have to think about the competition as guest houses are being developed across the Maldives. The investors will also consider about the host island as well,” said Minister Mausoom.
The Decentralization Act requires councils to create land use plans. According to the Law on Decentralization, the island council must prepare the island's development plan and land use plan within three months of the elected members taking office, with technical help provided by the Atoll Council.
