Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid on Tuesday morning attended the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister H.E. Shinzo Abe.
The Foreign Minister represented Maldives on behalf of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as his special envoy, at the funeral service held in Tokyo.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel and the Ambassador of Maldives to Japan, Hassan Sobir participated in the funeral service with the Foreign Minister. A number of state leaders and other foreign dignitaries were also present at the service.
The 67-year-old former Prime Minister was assassinated in July - shot twice by a homemade gun. The killing shocked a country unused to gun crimes or political violence, triggering an outpouring of grief for a leader who had never been that popular.
