A no-confidence motion against Health Minister Abdulla Ameen has been submitted to the Parliament.
During the MDP parliamentary group meeting held to make the decision on submitting a no-confidence petition to the Parliament to dismiss Ameen, the required amount of votes required to pass the decision was not met. Where only 27 out of 58 members have submitted their vote against Ameen.
Although the ruling party, MDP parliamentary group voted declining the no-confidence against Ameen, in response to the corruption allegations in connection to the ventilators procurement, some MDP parliamentarians have signed and submitted a petition for a No-confidence motion against the Health Minister to the parliament.
Following the MDP parliamentary group meeting, MDP representing members at the parliament, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, and Deputy Speaker, Eva Abdulla have raised their views against the MDP parliamentary group vote decision.
During a heated debate on MDP parliamentary group’s Whatsapp group, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has already stated his intentions to push for the no-confidence motion against Ameen, even if he has to go against the party whip-line.
According to the Parliament regulations, to submit a no-confidence motion against a Cabinet minister requires the signature of 10 parliament members and requires a majority to vote to pass the motion.
As per the investigation of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), the Health Ministry has paid 90 percent of the total payment, to the Dubai company as an advance, without obtaining an advance guarantee or a performance guarantee and upon investigation, the ACC has requested the Prosecutor General (PG) Office to press charges for 11 people on the corruption and fraud in connection with the 75 ventilators procured through a Dubai company, against the financial law and procedures. This request was sent on the 14th of October from ACC to the PG office.
However, the Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem has announced the decision to decline to press charges against the Health Ministry, earlier this Tuesday, with a lack of evidence.
