President of the Asset Recovery Commission, Mr. Ahmed Assad, said that a request would be sent to the Prosecutor General office (PG) to press charges against 20 people following the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement and money laundering scandal.

Due to the delay in investigations of MMPRC, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), PG office, and Asset Recovery Commission were brought in for questioning at the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions.

Speaking at the Parliament Committee meeting, Mr. Ahmed Assad said that the investigation is ongoing for the theft of 77 million USD from the state, along with releasing 37 islands and 12 lagoons against the constituency. Mr. Ahmed Assad also highlighted the challenges faced during the investigation for the cash transferred and purchasing houses or exchanging money for goods through the MMPRC embezzlement.

As per Mr. Ahmed Assad, through the investigations of the MMPRC scandal, another scam has been raised as well and, it will continue to investigate furthermore on it.

Speaking at the Parliament Committee meeting, the President of the ACC, Mariyam Shiuna, has said that 20 cases in connection with the MMPRC scandal, has been prioritized to continue for further investigations.

Furthermore, during the Parliament Committee meeting, PG Hussain Shameem has said that a separate unit with six lawyers has been formed within the PG office to review the MMPRC case and its investigations.
