Former Transport Minister Adil Saleem has said that the population of the Maldives should be increased by giving an allowance to parents.

Adil Saleem said this after the census showed that the population of foreigners is increasing twice as much as the population of the country.

Expressing his concern over the census findings, Adil Saleem said that while we are shouting "out" to expel foreigners, the "out" is seen in numbers for the locals. He described this as the extinction of the Maldivian race.

He further highlighted that this should also be addressed as soon as possible, even if it is by giving an allowance for parents for each child who has more than two children.

The local population is 355,331, according to the data collected so far from this year’s census. Eight years ago, in the 2014 census, the number stood at 338434. Therefore, the local population of the country increased by 16897 people in 8 years.

Eight years ago, the foreign population was 63637. However, the number has now risen to 97164. This is an increase of 33527.

Therefore, the growth rate of the foreign population in the Maldives is two times higher than the local Maldivian population.
