The vice president of the Maldives National Party (MNP), Ahmed Shareef, has voiced his concerns about raising taxes in the Maldives, stating that it would have devastating effects on private businesses.
Regarding the amendment proposed to the parliament on the raising of TGST (Tourism Goods and Services Tax) and GST (Goods and Services Tax), Shareef said that if taxes are increased, there will be a great loss of jobs in the private sector and it will raise unemployment rates, moreover resulting in the complete failure of private businesses.
Shareef added that taxes should only be increased if the average life quality and salary of taxpayers and citizens have risen up.
Even though some have reported that members of the main ruling party, MDP, are divided on this amendment proposed by the government, the only MDP members opposing it are a few members of the anti-government faction.
The government has stated that raising taxes is necessary to lessen the negative effects of the current global economic decline.
