Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is working to establish a water reserve in the city, the company's Managing Director Hassan Shah said.
Speaking to state media, MWSC Managing Director Hassan Shah said the project of establishing the water reservoir is expected to be completed within the first quarter of next year. Shah said he would ensure that this is done in a sustainable manner.
Shah said the initial project was delayed due to changes in the plan. The design was changed because experts advised that the previous design was not designed to last for a long time, Shah said.
Shah said the design of the water reserve has been changed and the foundation work is being handed over to someone.
"We are working to complete the project by the first quarter of next year. Shah said.
The government has handed over the land to the MWSC in June last year to establish a water backup system or reservoir in the city. The water reserve is being established in the city under the Special Water and Sewerage Act.
Under the Act, a water reserve must be established in every island in the country for a period of five days. Out of which two tanks of 13,000 tonnes will be installed in the capital city, Male'.
