(Reeko) Moosa Manik, the former chairperson of the MDP, has sharply criticized Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, claiming that there is no chance of a coup.
Former deputy speaker of parliament Reeko Moosa’s criticism was a response to Dr. Jameel’s statement against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on the Mauritius issue.
Regarding the Mauritius issue, the President has reassured us that the government has not made any decision that would affect the sovereignty of the Maldives nor will it make any such decision in the future.
However, responding to the President, Dr. Jameel alleged that the President was lying and that his statement made no sense. He claimed that the current government has confessed that it agreed with Mauritius, giving up part of the Maldives’ territory and selling the sovereignty of the nation. He also added people are heated on the matter enough to hand the rulers over to the mob and that the government deserves it.
In response, criticizing Dr. Jameel, Reeko Moosa Manik said that there is no chance for a coup and that it would be best to wait for heat for the upcoming presidential election. Moosa also called on Dr. Jameel not to leave the Government in the middle of the term when his supported candidate was the one who got elected.
Meanwhile, it is notable that Dr. Jameel is known to act openly to criticize the government and the ruler when he is displeased with them, even if he had supported them initially.
After allying with MDP to elect former President Nasheed, not long after he was elected, Dr. Jameel worked on bringing an end to Nasheed’s presidency. Afterward, Dr. Jameel worked to elect former President Yameen into power, and similarly to Nasheed's case, Dr. Jameel turned against Yameen and started campaigning to change that government.
Similarly, during President Solih's election, Dr. Jameel was with him in the coalition when he was elected, but a few days afterward started working with the opposition Yameen against President Solih's government. Dr. Jameel is currently the leading lawyer of Yameen’s legal team.
