The Deputy Minister of the Transport Ministry, Saudulla Ahmed has stated that the government will prove the true benefits of the tax system.

Responding to the opposition’s criticism of the government’s plan to raise taxes, Saud said that the government is fulfilling the needs of the people with the tax money.

To show an example of this, Saud spoke of the work being done to establish water supply and sewerage systems in the islands, saying it is the people who are benefiting from this. He added that the government is working on fulfilling the basic needs of the citizens.

Saud asserted that the government will prove the true benefits of the tax system by providing for the needs of the people.

The amendment to the tax bill proposed by the government proposes raising GST from 6% to 8% and TGST from 12% to 16%.

The recent Maldives Public Expenditure Review (PER) report released by the World Bank praised this decision of the government.
