Deputy Minister of the Health Ministry, Ms. Nishama Ahmed, gave the assurance for the investigations on Covid-19 response expenses by the Health Ministry, exposing the names of individual beneficiaries from the embezzlement.
In a letter sent to the President's office, Ms. Nishama stated that she is accused of involvement in corruption and fraud in connection to the ventilators procurement for covid-19 response through the Health Ministry. She further mentioned that she had no bad intentions about her work and offered to cooperate in the investigations by giving all the information she has, following a safety guarantee.
She specifically requested a safety guarantee for her through the Whistleblower Protection Act 2019 (Act No. 16/2019).
Meanwhile, her lawyer has said that the letter was sent to the President's office earlier into the ventilator procurement investigations, giving her assurance for the investigations on Covid-19 response expenses by the Health Ministry. As per the lawyer, Nishama has stated all the information she has, related to the corruption in connection to the ventilator procurement investigations.
As per the investigation report by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), the Health Ministry processed payment of the 75 ventilators to a Dubai company without an agreement, which is against the financial guidelines of the state.
Upon the investigation, ACC has requested the Prosecutor General (PG) office to press charges against 11 officials from the Health Ministry, including the former Health Minister Abdulla Ameen. Following this, PG has decided not to press charges lacking evidence to proceed to press charges.
