Former President Abdullah Yameen’s government tried to sell the atolls of the Maldives by amending the Constitution, stated Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid while speaking at a press conference with Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath at the Presidential Palace tonight.

Shahid made the statement in response to a question on whether President Yameen's accusations of the current government selling some areas of the country were true.

Shahid said that it was the government of President Yameen who tried to sell the individual atolls of the Maldives to foreigners. He said that one of the first things President Ibrahim Mohammed Saleh did when he came to power was to repeal the constitutional amendment to sell islands during the Yameen government.

In addition, Shahid said that some people are deliberately misrepresenting the Chagos issue.

The Chagos in the south of the Maldives have never been defined in the Constitution as the Maldives's sovereign territory, he said. Shahid reassured that the current government will not give any part of the country to any foreign entity.
