Parliament Member Ibrahim Rasheed defended the government by saying that anything about a coalition agreement not being in the constitution.
He said this following the backlash from the public towards the current administration's decision on appointing the Health Minister post to one of the ruling party, MDP representative when the Health Minister position falls for the Jumhoory party (JP) coalition agreement. As per the coalition agreement, Ministerial positions are divided amongst the coalition parties.
For which, MP Ibrahim Rasheed defended the current administration and its decision, saying that anything about a coalition agreement not being in the constitution. He also highlighted that the constitution orders to protect the rights of the Maldivians. He further said that government institutions cannot be divided into specific parties.
Although the coalition agreements between the political parties are not under the constitution, since the 2018 presidential elections, coalition agreements existed within political parties. Furthermore, the President does not represent a political party at the presidential level even though the President became elected through coalition support.
Similarly, heated discussions continue on social media following the President appointing Ahmed Naseem for the Health Minister while JP had already nominated five people for the Health Minister position.
