Foreign Minister and former Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Abdulla Shahid, has stated that the day former President Nasheed resigned was the most challenging situation in Shahid's time at the Parliament.

Speaking at a televised program by the Public Service Media, Mr. Shahid said that he was in charge of the oath-taking ceremony of the former Vice President Abdulla Waheed as the President, following the resignation of Mr. Nasheed as the President. Shahid described it as the most challenging day in his time at the Parliament.

He highlighted the process of resignation as the main difference in the constitution followed back then, and the new one followed now. He said that in the former constitution followed, if anyone applies for resignation from his/her position, they will still be serving for the designation till the resignation is accepted. Meanwhile, as per the new constitution, followed now states, that all the positions will become immediately vacant from the time of resignation applied.

Referring to the 7th of February incident where Nasheed gave his resignation from the presidency, Shahid said that he followed the process mentioned in the constitution upon receiving the resignation letter from Nasheed.

Back then, Shahid was a member of the opposition party, but it did not take much longer for him to change the party from DRP to MDP membership following the resignation of Nasheed.

This would be the first time Mr. Shahid addressed the 7th of February incident.

On the 7th of February 2012, former president Mohamed Nasheed resigned in the wake of a violent coup by Specialist Operations police officers and elements of the military, who assaulted pro-government supporters, looted the MDP meeting hall, and took over the state broadcaster. Nasheed said that he had to resign under pressure to protect his family and prevent bloodshed.
