North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam has stated there is no chance of Maldives going bankrupt and the people starving.

Speaking in the Parliament today, Aslam said that what some people are speaking about the most now is Maldivian debt, and lack of money to buy oil and food. But these are all lies, according to Aslam.

Aslam said that oil, food, and even other items can be imported to Maldives and that even now there is USD 250 million in aid for the reserve. He added that the government is working swiftly to secure an additional USD 200 million as budget support within this year and that he is confident that this will be achieved.

"And so there is no way the Maldives will drown in debt and become bankrupt and starve. Those are blatant lies. Either lying while knowing the truth or not knowing anything," said Aslam.

Members of the opposition party PPM and members of Nasheed's faction in MDP are saying the country's reserve is very low and they accuse the government of hiding this.

The government has denied these allegations. Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has rebutted the words of Mohamed Nasheed on this topic, saying that talks of Maldives going bankrupt are completely false.
