A Maldivian has been, elected as the Vice President of Seychelles.

Ahmed Afif, whose family is from Addu, Maldives, along with the Presidential candidate of Seychelles Wawel Ramkalawan, has succeeded in the 2020 presidential election of the country. Ahmed Afif and Wawel Ramkalawan, representing the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) party, won the election this year which, was held on Thursday and Friday of this week, securing 54.9% of votes.

With this success, Presidential candidate Wawel Ramkalawan and his running mate Ahmed Afif defeated President Danny Faure, who has been in power since 1977. During this election, more than 74,600 voters out of a population of 100,000 cast their votes.

Ahmed Afif is the son of the President of the United Suvadive Republic, late Abdulla Afif. The United Suvadive Republic or Suvadive Islands was a short-lived breakaway nation in the remote southern atolls of the Maldive Islands that constitute the Suvadive archipelago. Ahmed Afif's, brother Mohamed Afif was the Secretary of State for Cabinet Affairs during the administration of defeated President Danny Faure.
