Former President Abdullah Yameen has been sentenced to 11 years in jail on bribery and money laundering charges in connection to the sale of V. Aarah for resort development during his administration.

The Criminal Court today sentenced President Yameen to seven years in jail for money laundering and four years in jail for bribery. In addition, the Criminal Court Chief Judge Ahmed Shakeel fined him $5 million and ordered him to pay the money to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within six months.

After being convicted of taking bribes and money laundering, Yameen has lost his chance to contest the upcoming presidential election.

Earlier, he was also sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5 million in connection to Ga. Vomadula lease case. However, the Supreme Court later quashed the verdict.
