The government has commissioned a third party to design a new National Identity Card to replace the current one.

The Department of National Registration, DNR, has commissioned Encrea Pvt Ltd to redesign the existing ID card and introduce a smart ID card with advanced security features.

Encrea Pvt Ltd is a company of local designers who worked on the branding for the recent SAFF Championship. The company won first place among the designs submitted in the open call for the ID card redesign.

DNR has now signed an agreement to entrust Encrea Pvt Ltd to carry out the design changes.

While the decision has been made to change the design of the National ID card, the government has also decided to introduce digital ID cards to the country this month.

A digital ID card will have many security features. It was introduced through the newly launched eFaas application.

The digital ID card is designed to be visible in both Dhivehi and English. However, in the future, the card will be available in the language it was made, according to the National Center for Information Technology.
