In response to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) statement on Dhoonidhoo prisoners not receiving proper drinking water, Maldives Police Service started providing bottled water in Dhoonidhoo prison.

HRCM statement reads that the water provided in Dhoonidhoo prison has Coliform bacteria in it. HRCM has said that the water provided by the Dhoonidhoo prison is unsafe as per World Health Organization (WHO). HRCM also said that the water may cause alarming health issues within the inmates if continued to use unsanitary water.

In response to the statement by HRCM, Maldives Police Service stated that they are working on a permanent solution to the water provided in Dhoonidhoo prison as highlighted in the HRCM statement. Hence to provide clean water in Dhoonidhoo prison, the Maldives Police service ensures that a water chlorination system and an ultraviolet filtration system will be established soon.

Police have stated that the HRCM statement is released when the procurement process of the systems required to provide clean water is already ongoing under the Finance Ministry.

Police Service has also denied the accusation of HRCM stating that no actions have been taken by Police regarding the unsanitary water supply in Dhoonidhoo prison.
