The provisional results of the census conducted in Maldives last year has shown that the total population of the country is 515,122.

Last night, the Maldives Bureau of Statistics released some of the provisional results from last year's census.

The provisional census results show that the population of the country, including foreigners and natives, is 515,122, of which 382,751 are natives, and 132,371 are foreigners.



These figures show that 26 percent of the population is foreign. That is a ratio of one foreigner for every three locals.

According to the provisional results, 41 percent of the population lives in Male' City. Administrative islands other than the capital account for 46 percent of the population. 10 percent of the population lives in resort islands and 3 percent in industrial islands. Therefore, the results show that most of the people live in administrative islands outside Male'.

Looking at the populations in various administrative divisions, Addu City accounts for 5 percent or 25,053 of the total population. 4 percent of the population or 14,603 people live in HDh. Atoll. Administrative atolls with 3 percent of the population in each include HA., Sh., R., K. and L. Atolls. The remaining administrative atolls have 2 percent or less in each.



After eight years, the last census was conducted from September to October last year.

The data released last night was collected at the administrative island level. As such, the number of local residents, foreigners, and gender and age group information of each administrative island have been released. The number of households, the average number of people per household, buildings, sleeping quarters, labour quarters and workplaces were also released.



The Statistics Bureau said that it is also working on coding the census data and validating detailed information from various administrative divisions. And that dates on which results of other divisions will be released will be announced.

The census is conducted every 10 years to assess the situation of the country and collect information to facilitate the planning of future projects for the development of the country. Unlike other times, this time the census also collected information on businesses and job sectors.
