The third cycle of the Maldives’ Universal Periodic Review (UPR) commenced today during the 36th Session of the UPR Working Group at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The Maldives is represented at the review, by a high-level delegation headed by Ibrahim Riffath, Attorney General of the Maldives.
During his speech, Ibrahim Riffath reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensure the delivery of a safe environment in a rights-based society to the people of Maldives to enjoy freedom and dignity. Riffath stated that the Presidential Commissions established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih supports to ensure the Government’s commitment is achieved.
Riffath also stated that the Government of Maldives reiterates its commitment to uphold the informal moratorium on the death penalty. Instead, judicial reform and enhancing legislative mechanisms relating to the criminal justice system take precedence over resuming executions.
Along with this, Riffath assures that the current Government does not support, endorse, or will, in any manner entertain, the vile act of female genital mutilation.
Furthermore, in his speech, Riffath stated that the government has designated two entire atolls as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves along with more than 60
protected areas across the country.
Addressing the challenges brought by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Riffath said “Whilst we took unprecedented steps such as the imposition of a lockdown, we ensured that we minimized its adverse impacts on human rights."
