A major tourism project is set to be launched in Addu City.

The project, called World Sports City (WSC) MANTA Surf Village, is a project combining water sports and tourism to create a global surfing hub.

The project, which is being implemented in collaboration with foreign investors, will develop a tourist destination in an area of 10 million square metres. The international investors include Jo Palma + Partners Corporation, Gleeds International Ltd., Thornton Tomasetti, and Alcral AG.

The Addu City Council has started discussions on the development of this project and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the international partners.



Speaking to state media, Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar said that this is a major project to develop tourism in Addu City. And that the place will be developed with surfing and other water sports. In addition, the Mayor said that the Addu City Council will welcome individuals who seek to bring investment to the city. He also said that the Council has consulted with a Turkish company to set up a 240-room tourist investment in Hithadhoo.

According to the Addu City Council, the latest technology will be used to generate waves for surfing in MANTA Surf Village, to create a world-class surfing experience. There will also be a biosphere reserve, a sports academy, luxury hotels, various forms of entertainment, and the showcasing of local culture.

MANTA Surf Village is to be developed east of the Shangri-La Resort in Addu. While the design and development of the place has been contracted, the Addu City Council estimates that the project will be completed by 2030.
