The Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated that local tourism has expanded to 118 islands.
Dr. Mausoom said today that local tourism, from which the people get the benefits of tourism directly, has now expanded to 118 islands including all the atolls and cities of Maldives. He said it is now 27 percent of the country’s tourism beds.
The Minister said 909 tourist facilities have been set up in 118 islands in the country. He said that is 16,300 beds.
Earlier, Dr. Mausoom said his visits to the islands of Maldives had shown the extent to which local councils wanted to start local tourism. Therefore, he had said that the government will do everything possible to expand local tourism.
The current government has introduced home stay tourism to further expand local tourism.
