Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's party Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has decided to accept the invitation by prominent businessman Qasim Ibrahim's Jumhooree Party (JP) to hold talks on forming a political alliance for the upcoming presidential election.

MRM has said that the two parties have decided to hold talks at the invitation of JP leader Qasim Ibrahim. However, the party said the talks have not yet started.

JP invited five parties, including MRM, to form an alliance for the presidential election on Monday. However, no party other than MRM has decided to hold talks with JP.

Earlier, after a meeting with Maumoon, JP leader Qasim said that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's son Faris Maumoon is a capable candidate for the JP presidential candidate's running mate.

Both JP and MRM are two parties in the current ruling coalition.
