5,000 coconut palms have been brought to Maldives due to a shortage in coconuts.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed said today that since the coconut palms in the country have been infected with a disease, that has made it difficult to get coconuts.

According to the Minister, experts say that the trees in Maldives are suffering from a disease called sooty mold.

Dr. Hussain said the government has brought 5,000 coconut palms to Maldives to solve the coconut shortage problem, as an alternative to importing coconuts.

The Ministry said the trees are currently under quarantine and will be distributed to different islands.

STO has recently imported a shipment of coconuts due to high prices of coconuts in the market.
