Although the formation was lead by former President Mohamed Nasheed, the party submitted its application to the EC on Tuesday under the name of Parliament member for West Henveiru constituency, Hassan Latheef.

Following the approval from EC to for the 'The Democrats', the party will receive a three month period to recruit atleast 3,000 members. After submitting the membership forms, the party will then receive permission to host the inaugural meeting, for which EC should be invited.
