Deputy chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mr Ali Niyaz says that former president, Mr Yameen has suspended over 100 counsellors against the constituency during his term.
Suspension and issuance of warning for the counsellors by the Local Government Authority (LGA), has been decided as against the constituency from the high court hearing. In regards to this decision, a discussion was held at the parliament committee. During the discussion Mr Ali Niyaz, who is also a member at the parliament representing Hulhumale’, said that any elected person can only be penalized through the constituency.
Mr Ali Niyaz highlighted that former president, Mr Yameen has suspended over 100 counsellors against the constituency during his term.
High court decision mentions that the LGA formation is under the decentralisation law, which clears that the LGA gets to make the decision if only 2 counsellors have a different opinion. Since the law does not give LGA the right to penalise counsellors, the additional point in action is against the law. Hence these additional points provoking the constituency, is denied by unanimous decisions of the 3 judges during the high court hearing.
