MP Mohamed Aslam, ruling MDP’s Parliamentary Group leader, in a letter to the Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed, has requested to extend the ongoing second session of the Majlis until “five significant matters are resolved”.

In his letter MP Aslam noted that inclusion of agenda item for today’s sitting to address party representations in permanent committees of the Majlis while omitting other relevant issues was a breach of parliamentary procedures.

Majority Leader MP Aslam in his letter to the Speaker requested the latter to include the following five items in the agenda for today’s sitting, namely: revising the composition of the permanent committees, initiating debate on no-confidence motions filed against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid, revising parliamentary procedures, selecting an applicant to the membership of the elections commission and initiating debate on no-confidence motions filed against the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Majlis.

It is believed that MP Aslam has chosen to send this important letter to Speaker Nasheed on this, the last day (in normal circumstances) of the current session, to contribute in the attempts to break the three-week long deadlock of the Majlis.
