A woman who used a fire extinguisher to hose down a Quran-burning protester outside the Iranian embassy in Stockholm has been detained by Swedish police.
The lady was shown on video running up to Salwan Momika and sprinkling him with white powder before being stopped by police officers who guided her away from the incident. Momika, who on Friday seemed dazed but unharmed, then carried on with his police-approved demonstration.
The lady, who has not been named by police, was held on suspicion of upsetting public peace and assaulting a police officer, according to police spokesperson Towe Hagg.
In a string of anti-Islamic demonstrations, Momika, an Iraqi immigrant, has desecrated the Quran, inciting outrage in certain Muslim nations. Invoking the right to free speech, Swedish authorities have permitted his protests while also accusing him of making preliminary hate speech statements.
Prosecutors are investigating whether his actions are permissible under Sweden’s hate speech law, which bans incitement of hatred against groups or individuals based on race, religion, or sexual orientation. Momika has said his protests target the religion of Islam, not Muslim people.
